Another Fundraiser at the School?

May 3rd, 2012 at 05:44 am

My children's school had their last fundraiser of the year. I usually buy something that I don't need just so my kids participate. It was just too much this year for me. I didn't buy one item. Why do they have a fundraiser right after the deadline to pay property and income taxes? I also had to prepay their summer daycare. I feel a little bad.

Maybe they were thinking that when people receive their tax refunds, they might feel rich. I don't know, but it is still ridiculous!

Good for you! It's perfectly okay not to participate.

I agree. You don't have to do it.

I despise school fundraisers. It always comes down to spending money for something you don't really need/want. And the school usually gets a very small percentage. Frequently, I just send a check for $5-10 with a note that says I don't like to participate.

I know that many of our schools need money. I'd like to see it raised through grant-writing or fundraising beyond the parents and extended families of the children.

School fundraisers are ridiculous, but they are the direct result of the school districts not getting enough funding (and/or mismanaging the funding that they DO have). It leads to a lot of frustration, definitely, especially for families that do not have the insurance of a ton of discretionary income to start with!
